Penzel Construction Selected As Design-Build Contractor For Cape’s New Fire Station

The Cape Girardeau City Council moved forward recently with plans to build a new fire station by unanimously selecting Penzel Construction Company as their design-build contractor. The new $3 million Fire Station No. 4 will be built on the southwest corner of Lexington and Flad Avenues in the Laurel Grove neighborhood. It will replace a smaller fire station built more than 40 years ago.

Dille Traxel Architects, of Cape Girardeau, is a member of Penzel’s design-build team and will serve as lead architect and architect of record.

“The Design-Build delivery method offers so many advantages: a single contract; the power of the team; better cost-control and faster turn-around. With the strength and expertise of our team, we are confident we will deliver a project the City of Cape Girardeau will be proud of,” noted Phil Penzel, President of Penzel Construction.

Penzel has a long history of constructing projects for the City of Cape Girardeau. The 106-year-old company is currently building the new Cape Girardeau Sportsplex as a design-build project. This new, 121,000-square-foot world-class facility is sited at North Kingshighway and I-55 and will include six regulation basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts, two indoor collegiate soccer fields and a host of other amenities.

Penzel Construction is a pioneer in design-build and has a wide range of experience having constructed design-build projects as early as 1962.

“Since I assumed ownership of Penzel Construction in 1996, we have completed 60 projects using the design-build delivery method totaling more than $78 million in value. Ninety percent of these projects have been built within a 30-mile radius of Cape Girardeau,” added Penzel.

Work on the new Fire Station No. 4 begin in August 2016 and is expected to be completed in October 2017.
