New Cape Girardeau SportsPlex Moves Forward

Last summer, The Cape Girardeau City Council approved a new indoor sports complex and entered into a development agreement with a team comprised of Midamerica Hotels Corp. and Penzel Construction for the building’s design and construction.

As part of the agreement, Midamerica will donate 10.27 acres to the city for the facility at the northeast corner of Interstate 55 and U.S. 61, in the area known as Center Junction. An adjoining 19.12 acres could be acquired by the city by purchase or exchange for property owned by the city.

Last June, the Council selected the team to design the facility for "maximum opportunity for usage." As reported in the Southeast Missourian, Mayor Harry Rediger praised the sport complex's committee, city staff and others involved for their work on the project.

The 121,000-square-foot world-class facility will be funded by the city's 1% restaurant tax. The sports complex will include six regulation basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts, two indoor collegiate soccer fields, baseball/softball training fields, batting cages and a host of other amenities. The NUCOR metal building is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2017.

According to Penzel Constructions’s President and CEO, Phil Penzel, “The design phase and the site work are complete and the pre-engineered structure is beginning to take shape. We have benefitted by a fairly mild winter."
