Cape SportsPlex Construction Update

Penzel Construction is making steady progress on the new Cape Girardeau SportsPlex. The colored exterior panels are complete and the building has been made weather-tight in anticipation of winter. Basketball and volleyball sports equipment has arrived and the wood flooring will soon be installed.

In the coming weeks, the artificial turf for the soccer fields will be installed. The non infill turf performs higher in wear and resistance tests and provides "true ball roll.” It is also soft enough to absorb impact, reducing the risk of injuries.

Drone footage taken recently shows the progress of the new SportsPlex, which is located at the northeast corner of Interstate 55 and U.S. 61, in the area known as Center Junction.

The 121,000-square-foot SportsPlex facility will include:

  • 6 regulation basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts

  • 2 indoor collegiate soccer fields

  • baseball/softball training fields

  • batting cages

  • and a host of other amenities.

The NUCOR metal building is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2017. Once the Sportsplex is open, it is expected to draw sporting and tournament business from a five state region; Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee – all within a 200+ mile radius of SEMO. This area is considered a regional hub for business, medical, education and recreational opportunities and Penzel Construction is pleased to be a part of its growth.
