Lone Star Industries, Inc.

Project Scope: Clinker storage silo foundations
Owner: Lone Star Industries, Inc.
Location: 2524 South Sprigg Street, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Project Delivery: Foundations

The Lone Star Industries Inc. site is located on 2,023 acres at in Cape Girardeau. Lone Star currently operates a dry process rotary cement kiln with a four-stage preheater and a precalciner. The kiln produces clinker, the main ingredient in Portland cement. Penzel constructed the foundations: 750 pilings, which translates into 82,500 feet of piling, or more than 15.5 miles. The deep pilings, which were installed 110 feet below ground, were necessary because Lone Star is in a seismic zone. The pilings support silos that are 120 feet tall and 70 feet in diameter. The silos will be capable of storing 40,000 tons of clinker.

All aspects of the project including steel, reinforcement, forms, concrete placement, coordination with the ready-mix and Lone Star, scheduling, timing, safety, and overall management of the project exceeded our expectations.
