A Life Well-Lived

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carl Gene Penzel on November 20, 2018, former beloved president and owner of Penzel Construction Co., Inc. Born in Jackson, Missouri on January 10, 1934 to Carl L. and Mettie Penzel, Gene would go on to live a full and meaningful life with a focus on service to others.

The Early Years

Gene was a 1951 graduate of Jackson High School. He completed a one-year pre-engineering program at Southeast Missouri State before enrolling in the engineering program at the University of Missouri, Rolla. In 1955, Gene earned his Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering degree and, shortly thereafter, became a Professional Engineer.

After graduation, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He then enrolled in advanced flight training in Kingsville, Texas, where he would become the first student to be instructed in jet aircraft. He was a distinguished naval aviator who went on to become a naval flight trainer in Pensacola, Florida. He instructed future naval pilots in fighter tactics, instruments, cross-country navigation, bombing, gunnery and aircraft carrier qualifications. Gene served honorably from 1955-1959 achieving the rank of lieutenant.

This One Factor Influences Construction Costs the Most

There are many factors that influence the cost of construction. Some are obvious: land acquisition, permits and construction costs. Then there are the future costs or life-cycle costs to consider: maintenance, repair, replacement—the cost of keeping the facility and its systems up and running.

When Collaboration Saves Time, Money, and the Project

What business wouldn’t choose a building process that offers opportunities to save money, to reduce construction time, to allow customization, to optimize quality, and to streamline the entire experience?

No hands raised in the audience? That comes as no surprise to all of us at Penzel Construction. We’ve worked with hundreds of clients since 1910, and those are key advantages that every one of our clients has valued.

Cape Girardeau Fire Station No. 4 Ready To Serve

Penzel Construction President Phil Penzel, left, presents Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger with a “Proud To Buy American” plaque during the dedication ceremony.

Penzel Construction is proud to announce the completion of the brand new Fire Station No. 4 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

A dedication ceremony was held on December 1, 2017 for the $3.4 million fire station, located in the Laurel Grove neighborhood, serves the northwest quadrant of the City of Cape Girardeau and was built to replace a smaller fire station that was constructed more than 40 years ago.

A larger station was needed in part by growth in the city. In addition to protecting the increasing number of commercial and residential developments, the station also serves much of Interstate 55 that passes through the city and responds through an automatic-aid agreement to all incidents in Cape Girardeau County involving potential rescues and extrications.

The Cornerstone of Our Business

Penzel Construction's Dave Parker, removes the Building “A” cornerstone.

Penzel Construction has been constructing SEMO schools, churches, manufacturing facilities and commercial buildings since its founding. And, our commitment to quality work and exceptional customer service has been the cornerstone of our business

My great-grandfather, Linus Penzel, hung out the Penzel Construction shingle in 1910. Within 10 years, our company’s founder was building Jackson High School, a classically-styled red brick American school that would serve the Jackson, Missouri community for nearly a century.

Running For A Reason

In 2008, I had an epiphany. I was feeling sluggish, my blood pressure was high and the stress of managing a large commercial construction company was taking its toll on me. I was 35 pounds heavier than I wanted to be and I really needed to make a change in my life.

I began to run. Slow at first. And, I didn’t like it much. But, I stuck with it because I needed to. And, so I decided to begin running in timed races.

Honoring A Friend of the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex

Nearly every day, we hear from people who have been watching the progress on the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex. This is natural as it’s a high-profile project—not just in size and scope. The 121,000-square-foot, world-class facility features two indoor soccer fields, six regulation basketball courts that convert into 12 volleyball courts, a concessions area, meeting rooms, an office and a variety of other amenities. Penzel Construction is keenly aware that city officials, taxpayers, parents and athletes all eagerly await the opportunity to use this new facility. We are happy to say the project progresses on-time and is scheduled to open in the spring.

Recently, we received a message through Penzel Construction’s Facebook page from Carrie McClard, a local hair stylist.
