A few weeks ago, long-time client The Bank of Missouri celebrated its 125th Anniversary. Founded in 1891 as The Bank of Perryville, the financial institution has not only weathered many economic ups and downs—it has thrived!

Penzel Construction has been fortunate to work with The Bank of Missouri’s President, John Thompson, and Chief Executive Officer, David Crader, for more than 15 years (see timeline infographic below). The first project together was the new construction of the original branch office in Jackson. Two years later, Penzel began construction on the new two-story building on William Street in Cape Girardeau. Initial plans called for finishing out the basement and first floor of that building with future plans to complete the second floor.

Four years later, work was completed at the former uptown data processing center in Perryville as well as the Marble Hill bank branch. And, Penzel had also finished the second floor of the Cape Girardeau building, which now includes executive offices, a boardroom and serves as the bank’s Investment & Retirement Planning Division.

Since then, the two companies have worked together to complete numerous additions, renovations and new construction for branches in Perryville, Marble Hill, Scott City, Patton, Jackson, and Poplar Bluff (pictured above).

When asked how The Bank of Missouri and Penzel Construction first met, Crader notes, “We were looking for a contractor who would do design-build and Phil presented me with an idea that created a lot of trust. When you build a $2 million facility and you do it on a handshake, there is a lot of trust there.”

“The design-build delivery system is meant to do just that,” says Phil Penzel, President of Penzel Construction. “We use this system because it has many advantages over traditional design-bid-build. It not only saves money, but typically the owner can occupy the building sooner and they only have to manage one contract—with the design-builder,” adds Penzel.

Paying attention to the needs of the customer is just one of the things The Bank of Missouri and Penzel Construction have in common. Both companies are more than 100 years old (Penzel will be celebrating 107 years in 2017) and both are poised for even more growth in the coming years.

The Penzel Construction team would like to congratulate The Bank of Missouri on this milestone. “With this bank’s leadership and commitment to the Southeast Missouri community, we are confident The Bank of Missouri will go on to celebrate many more decades of service,” adds Penzel.
